Mercedes-Benz was one of the first players in the luxury SUV market, but so far, the integrated part of that market has been overlooked by the three-point star. To remedy that problem is the brand new 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350, a compact crossover that integrates items from the rest of the product system. Based on the C-Class sedan, but the blocky style has been hit from its big kids GL- and G-Class, the GLK is like a very big album with a new or two tracks on its sleeve.

The 2010 GLK350 is the second cheapest Mercedes to buy in the country, but you will never regret it. The GLK is built at such a high level that its price point above the equally armed competitors seems justified. Close the GLK doors and the noise they emit gives you the feeling of closing the bank vault - what is missing is that it has something with spinny wheels. Pass through the train tracks and the body does not turn slightly, and any throws or giggles do not greet your back. This little SUV feels like you can drive over an explosive and get nothing but a muted "thump". The GLK350 may be infallible, but when it comes to careful construction quality, it simply does not fit in this category.

Drive the GLK back with the C-Class sedan and you will definitely get the feeling that it is close. In addition to its feel above the ironclad, the direction and ride of the GLK is remarkably similar to the C. Not surprisingly, the GLK was built using a 4-inch C-Class platform that was compacted with a suitable SUV removal clearance. The GLK and C350 share the same 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is the only GLK power option (Bluetec diesel option should be available in the coming model years), while the automatic-speed automatic is a one-way transmission.

The interior is also a pool of ol 'C-Class block - and we mean block. The controls are almost identical, but are placed on a straight dashboard with a visible curved surface. When darkened, the GLK austere cabinet is a relatively stable German closest to the Hofbräu tent in Oktoberfest. What may not be brilliant, however, the interior of the GLK is more than just made with high-quality materials and perfect balance and finish. Mercedes ’interior design has taken a few years to complete, but the GLK quality design proves that this three-point star represents world standard as well. The simple electronic interface is less attractive, but we love it better than BMW's Drive system.

GLK has a few pairs, though. Its large cargo capacity and rear leg compartment on the lower side between luxury SUVs, so if you are looking for a tow truck, you should look elsewhere. The Volvo XC60 offers just enough of that extra feature to make it more appealing to families, while the Lexus RX 350 is also almost the same price and is in full size. If the size is right, but you want something stylish and sporty, the Audi Q5 should also be considered. The Acura RDX and Infiniti EX35 can be an affordable option that offers a more powerful driving experience.

However, even though the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 may not be the cheapest, biggest, or most fun to drive a compact luxury crossover, it is well packed to find light flashes. We think consumers will find it a compelling choice and will be happy to find that Mercedes is also top of its game.
